Savinelli Series III pipes are unfinished and un-fancy, yet provide the most desired quality for any pipe: A great smoke!
They started out as various Savinelli shapes for different lines, and were pulled from the batch for various cosmetic reasons such as small voids, or irregularities or openings in the grain. Rather than being destroyed, as is the case with other briar pieces with more functional issues, these were sanded as smooth as possible and fitted with a non-filtered or 9mm-filtered vulcanite stem and are sold in an "unfinished" state. What this means is that these are still very good smoking, well-drilled and stamped Savinelli pipes, without staining or waxing...just with a few cosmetic flaws to give them a bit of character. This provides a wonderful smoking instrument at a very reasonable value that has the potential to smoke even cooler than your more expensive pipes, because they have no finish barriers to hold in heat. In addition, these pipes have the side-benefit of coloring to a dark brown over time as they are smoked!

The picture is only a sample of how your pipe will appear. Due to the nature of these pipes, there will be slight differences in shaping and locations of flaws. I've done my best to accurately describe each Series III pipe by comparing the Savinelli Shape Chart with my own personal knowledge of pipe shapes, but I've been known to make mistakes. Before purchasing, please make sure you'll be happy with a slight variant of the pipe pictured.
This is an unfiltered pipe. If you are looking for a first pipe or are fairly new to pipe smoking, I strongly recommend trying a 6mm or 9mm filtered pipe. If you're one of the many who battle the dreaded tongue-bite, filtered pipes help to alleviate this problem. You can always try smoking your filtered pipes without a filter in place, to see if unfiltered smoking irritates your tongue, and can purchase non-filtered pipes from there. If you already know that tongue-bite is not an issue for you, then never mind. :)
